Malta International Photo Award Spring 2019

The 2nd Edition of the Malta International Photo Award focused on 3 main categories including Sport, Technology and Wildlife.

WINNER

Curiosity

MICHAEL SMITH

‘Curiosity’ is an incredible piece of art. The cheeky Humpback Whale calf came just a metre away from Michael Smith who managed to take this absolutely stunning close-up of this wonderful mammal. Michael is a dedicated environment and nature photographer, who has been since 2010 pursuing his passion with incredible enthusiasm. Getting up close with nature makes us realise the enormity of the world around us and how everything is interconnected together.

2ND PLACE Explosion ANUP SHAH

'Explosion' by Anup Shah is an incredible snap of a leaping, kicking, scampering, bucking, exploding wildebeest during The Great Migration. Perhaps it is the use of black and white photography or the up close and personal approach used by Anup, which give this image a raw and uninhibited feeling.

3RD PLACE

Teamwork

DIKYE ARIANI

‘Teamwork’ is a colourful close-up of three ants, busy storing away their food supply. The award-winning photographer Dikye Ariani impeccably captured the collaborative effort of this insect family. A perfect definition of small and mighty. Ant societies work in parallel with human societies – labour is divided, communication exists between individuals, and they have an acute ability for problem solving.
