WINNER

Fireworks over Citadella

ROSS MAGRI

This photo was taken during the feast of Santa Maria, celebrated in Victoria, Gozo on the 15th of August. The Feast of the Assumption, also known as the feast of ‘Santa Maria', marks the ascent into heaven by the Virgin Mary. This popular Maltese ‘festa' is the peak of the summer season of religious village feasts and is celbrated in 7 towns and villages: Għaxaq, Gudja, Ħ'Attard, Mosta, Mqabba and Qrendi in Malta, and Victoria in Gozo. It is also a public holiday.

2ND PLACE

Salt Pans

FELIX CESARE

An ancient salt-harvesting tradition on the Maltese island of Gozo. The northern coast of Gozo is characterised by a chequerboard of rock-cut saltpans protruding into the sea. These 350-year-old salt pans, which stretch about 3km along the coast, are more than just scenic. They are part of the centuries-old Gozitan tradition of Sea-Salt production that has been passed down within certain families for many generations.

3RD PLACE

Gostra

DARRIN ZAMMIT LUPI

A man runs up the “gostra”, a pole covered in grease, during the religious feast of St Julian, patron of the town of St Julian’s, August 25, 2013. In the traditional “gostra”, a game stretching back to the Middle Ages, young men, women and children have to make their way to the top and try to uproot one of the flags to win prizes. From May to September in Malta, there is hardly any weekend when a town or a village is not celebrating the feast of its patron saint or other saints revered in different churches.

TOP FIVE

Exploring the Caves
PETER BULLEN

Divers discover the beauty of Malta's underwater world, the Santa Maria Caves, North coast of Comino.  There are 10 caves which are known to divers and they each have their particular beauty.

TOP FIVE

St Paul's Island: Path to Heaven
MARIO RODGERS

This shot was driven by the early light and eeriness of the scene.  The small island off the eastern coast of Malta, also known as Selmunett, is said to be the island where St. Paul shipwrecked in 60AD, while on his way to Rome to face charges.

TOP TEN

Old Capital Mdina

JONATHAN BORG

Sunlight breaks through the clouds to shine over the old capital, Mdina.

TOP TEN

Valletta Gloom

MICHAEL BREITUNG

A brief break in the clouds bathes the city of Valletta in golden light as dark storm clouds loom over the city.

TOP TEN

Santa Maria

MARK ZAMMIT CORDINA

The photographer took his drone to the sky and managed to get a different angle of the statue and Mosta Church during one of the traditional village feasts.

TOP TEN

Dwejra Bay Sunset

GILBERT VANCELL

The sun setting behind the Fungus Rock, captured from a cliff cave over Dwejra Bay, Gozo.

TOP TEN

Sea Side Fireworks

NICHOLAS GRECH

The image incapsulates the joy and colour that comes with the traditional Maltese Festa. In Marsascala the feast of St Anne takes place in close proximity to the bay, which in turn reflects the beauty and magic of such summer time celebrations which are a staple of Maltese culture.
